Barco and Fabricom GTI team up to install state-of-the-art Vessel Traffic Services system at port of Antwerp

Barco, together with Fabricom GTI, has been selected to install a high-performance Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system, including new radars, for the port of Antwerp. This large-scale port project, which was commissioned by the Flemish Agency for Maritime Services and Coast, Shipping Assistance Division and by the port of Antwerp, has a total contract value of 4.2 million euro. Barco's component-based VTS technology will offer Antwerp's VTS operators an innovative and reliable traffic control system and will significantly enhance the safety at Europe's second largest port.

Enhancing maritime safety and efficiency

"To sustain a strong market position, the port of Antwerp needs to guarantee the safety of the vessel traffic as well as smooth cargo operations for our customers, says Ivo Koeklenberg, chief engineer - director at the port of Antwerp. "We are convinced that Barco and Fabricom GTI's VTS solution will help us meet these goals by providing us with their advanced technology and professional 24/7 life cycle support.

"We are pleased to continue our success in the Maritime Surveillance and Security market together with our partner Fabricom GTI, says Volker Braun, Market Director of Barco's Surveillance & Security business unit. "We have already proven our joint capabilities with the implementation of the Maritime Rescue and Co-ordination Center in Ostend, Belgium, and we are convinced that with our open VTS solution the port of Antwerp will be prepared for future evolutions and requirements.

A comprehensive VTS offering, from sensor to display

Next to the replacement of 6 port radars, the contract includes the supply of a comprehensive range of integrated hardware and software components. In order to provide the Antwerp operators with a complete traffic image, including high-resolution radar video, radar tracks and Automated Information System (AIS) information, Barco will install multiple traffic display systems at different locations of the Antwerp port area. Thanks to Barco's browser-based client-server interface, operators and authorized stakeholders will be able to access all traffic information via the internet.

Barco's innovative radar video network solution, including radar server, radar extractor tracker and Multi-Sensor Fusion Tracker meets the highest tracking and radar video performance requirements, and is ready to deal with the challenges of a large port environment. Barco's VTS solution will also incorporate recording and playback functionality of the traffic image and synchronized voice communication.

To guarantee the continuous availability of information and operator communication, Barco and Fabricom GTI will provide a powerful IT infrastructure, with a fully redundant set-up of VTS data processing centers.

To allow for real-time collaborative decision making, the contract also includes the supply of a large-scale, high-resolution video wall, where the common operational picture will be presented.

Milestones

The project was kicked off in June 2006. The consortium will carry out the entire project, including program management, design, implementation, installation and extensive operator training, in order to have the new VTS system operational by September 2007
