QinetiQ appoints new MD for airport technologies business
Phil McLachan

QinetiQ is pleased to announce the appointment of Phil McLachlan as managing director of QinetiQ Airport Technologies, the business unit within QinetiQ that is responsible for the Tarsier runway debris detection system. McLachlan, currently the director leading Accenture UK's aerospace and defence practice, will take up post on 16 April 2007.

During his six years at Accenture McLachlan built, shaped and grew the company's aerospace and defence (A&D) practice, a business delivering consulting, systems integration and business process outsourcing to the UK's largest A&D prime contractors. Prior to joining Accenture McLachlan served as an officer in the Royal Air Force for 16 years, holding a range of senior RAF and UK Ministry of Defence posts.

As managing director of QinetiQ Airport Technologies, McLachlan's initial responsibility will be the continued growth of QinetiQ's Tarsier business. Tarsier is a highly sensitive radar system that accurately detects and locates potentially dangerous debris on airport runways. Last year, Vancouver International Airport became the first airport to install and operate a Tarsier system, which is now fully integrated into Vancouver's airside operations, and Dubai International Airport is currently installing a system. Further systems are being installed at Heathrow and Providence, Rhode Island, for extended evaluations.

Commenting on the appointment, Hal Kruth, managing director of QinetiQ's Security and Dual Use sector, said: "I am delighted to welcome to QinetiQ someone of Phil's business and technology expertise in the aerospace sector. His experience of starting and growing a business while at Accenture will be invaluable as he develops our airport technologies business, using Tarsier as the bridgehead into the airports and airlines market."

Phil McLachlan said: "There is significant worldwide interest in Tarsier and I am excited by the opportunity to play a leading role in exploiting the successes that QinetiQ has achieved with the system. There is tremendous potential to develop a successful business from an innovative technology that directly addresses an important safety, cost and efficiency issue faced by every major airport and airline in the world."
