WORLD FIRST SILICON GYRO TECHNOLOGY WINS QUEEN'S AWARD
FOR BAE SYSTEMS
BAE SYSTEMS has won a Queen's Award for Enterprise for its world-leading silicon gyroscope technology, developed in the UK.
The accolade was awarded for the SiVSGÃ’ gyroscope - the world's first micro-machined silicon ring gyroscope - which is used to detect rotational motion in both commercial and defence applications. Plymouth-based BAE SYSTEMS' Inertial Systems Division won the Award in the Innovation category for the break-through technology.
The new silicon technology is much cheaper, smaller and lighter than conventional gyroscope products - and is also more robust and reliable. Already over four million gyroscopes are in anti-skid braking and navigation systems in cars. BAE SYSTEMS are the only company to successfully produce, demonstrate and secure production contracts for smart weapons programmes using silicon gyros.
The gyroscope is also used to provide the essential stabilisation in the innovative self-balancing two wheeled Segway ä Human Transporter.
The gyroscope was developed at the division's site in Southway, Plymouth - and is made in the UK and Japan through Silicon Sensing Systems, a joint venture with Sumitomo Precision Products, at Plymouth and Amagasaki.
The cutting edge gyroscope has enabled cost reductions in traditional markets and is opening up new high volume markets such as in the automotive field.
Mike Turner, BAE SYSTEMS Chief Executive said today: "We are absolutely delighted to be awarded this accolade. It's a suitable tribute to the outstanding work that has been carried out to create, develop and produce this technology.
David Squires, Managing Director Inertial Systems Division added: "The SiVSGÒ gyroscope won the award in the Innovation category of the Queen's Awards for Enterprise - which is entirely appropriate because it is a truly innovative product. The SiVSG is revolutionising the number and variety of applications in which gyroscope technology can be used.
"The silicon gyro is the embodiment of our vision to provide innovative solutions into commercial and defence markets. For example, our low cost silicon gyros are enabling motor manufacturers to make significant advances in safety and vehicle dynamics control.
BAE SYSTEMS is also at an advanced stage of developing the next generation of innovative next generation products - the capacitive gyro - which will give even greater cost and performance benefits.
