Gangwon Fire Fighting Department Orders One AW139 Utility Helicopter

AgustaWestland is pleased to announce that the Korean Government has signed a second contract for an additional AW139 medium-twin helicopter in fire fighting / utility configuration for operation by the Gangwon Fire Fighting Department. The order, secured with the support of AgustaWestland's Korean representative, United Industries International (UII), represents the third AW139 helicopter to be sold into Korea for government applications.

The Gangwon Fire Fighting Department AW139 will perform Fire Fighting duties as its primary task and will be delivered with the capability to operate with bambi bucket and belly tank fire fighting equipment. The helicopter will also be equipped with a rescue hoist, emergency medical services provisions and a cabin configuration to transport 12 passengers and separately two VIP's.

Speaking after the contract award, Giacomo Saponaro, Senior Vice President International Government Business Unit, AgustaWestland said "We were delighted with the first two AW139 sales into the Korea but the third success represents a significant breakthrough into what is recognized as a difficult market to penetrate.

The AW139 is a new generation helicopter setting new standards of safety, comfort and performance in the medium twin engine helicopter market. Designed with inherent multi-role capability and flexibility of operation, the AW139 is capable of carrying up to 15 passengers at high speed, in the most spacious cabin and with the best power reserve of any helicopter in its class. The internal dimensions of the AW139's roomy unobstructed cabin and the impressive payload make it an ideal choice for rescue and fire fighting applications. The flat floor, large cabin doors and unobstructed cabin provide easy and quick access for stretchers and survivors.

With a maximum endurance of over 5 hours and a range in excess of 1000 km, the AW139 can perform long range rescue missions. The new technology Honeywell Primus Epic® fully integrated avionics package and large flat panel colour displays in the cockpit reduces pilot workload and allow the crew to concentrate on the patrol and rescue missions.

The AW139 has become the benchmark medium-twin helicopter and orders for more than 330 helicopters have been placed by nearly 90 commercial and government customers in over 30 countries to carry out a number of roles including fire fighting, emergency medical services, rescue missions, VIP/corporate transport, utility transport, offshore missions, law enforcement and homeland security.
