AIS launches new, solid state MEMS inertial systems technology with twice the performance

Atlantic Inertial Systems (AIS) launches its next generation of ruggedized solid state MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) inertial systems at the Paris Airshow next week. By introducing a new MEMS gyro into their inertial measurement unit (SiIMU02) and single axis rate sensor (SiRRS02) products, AIS can offer improved noise performance and half the bias of its first generation inertial systems. This new MEMS rate sensor represents a significant technological step forward, extending the range of potential applications for MEMs based inertial systems.
Hugh Williams, Engineering Director, AIS, comments: "The enhanced performance of our new generation rate sensor grows the potential market for these MEMS inertial systems significantly. For example, the improved performance SiIMU02 and SiRRS02 products now offer the high levels of performance necessary for long endurance missions and applications traditionally serviced by higher cost, larger and heavier mechanical or fibre optic based inertial systems."
AIS MEMS ruggedized inertial systems are widely used in a variety of military applications today including precision artillery munitions, guided rockets and missiles. The design of the MEMS sensor has been optimized to reduce the critical performance parameters of bias and noise. This has been achieved without compromising the outstanding resilience of the silicon ring based sensor to operating vibration and shock - an important discriminator between AIS technology and that of its competitors.
AIS is a market leader in inertial sensors and sensor systems - both traditional spinning wheel gyros and solid state MEMS sensors - supplying the appropriate product for each customer and application. Over 20,000 AIS MEMS inertial systems are in use today on military platforms such as Excalibur, RAM, Seawolf and NLAW and more than 4 million spinning wheel based products have been delivered worldwide to a huge range of customers and applications.
