European Aerospace and Defence Industry welcomes Security Research Initiative of the European Commission
The European aerospace and defence industry welcomes the initiative announced today by the European Commission on the enhancement of European industrial potential in the field of security research. Industry looks forward to working with the Commission and other stakeholders in taking thisinitiative forward.
Background
On the invitation of EU Commissioners Philippe Busquin (Research) and Erkki Liikanen (Enterprise and Information Society), a Group of Personalities drawn from European governments, academia and industry (including several aerospace and defence personalities), gathered yesterday in Brussels to define an agenda for European security research. The Group will spearhead the development of a European security research programme by 2006.
In the first phase it will advise the European Commission on the implementation of a preparatory action for security research, for which € 65 million has been proposed for 2004-2006. The preparatory action and the future programme focus on enhancing the EU's scientific and technological capabilities with the aim of ensuring the security of European citizens.
