Telair Hardened Container Passes TSA/FAA In-Service Blast Test
MIESBACH, GERMANY, December 7, 2003: Telair International, a Teleflex Company (NYSE:TFX), announced today that its patented Hardened Unit Load Device (HULD) - an on-board baggage container designed to safely absorb a significant explosion - passed the stringent blast test for in-service units as specified and conducted by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The testing took place under the direction of the TSA on December 2 and 3 at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. The in-service blast test measures a unit's ability to provide a consistent level of blast resistance over time and subject to daily operation. The units tested, which had been in service with a global carrier for several months and been repaired in accordance with the manufacturers Component Maintenance Manual (CMM) subsequent to service, passed with a 100% success rate.
"The Telair Hardened Unit Load Device has proven it can deliver on-board blast protection under real-world conditions, said Axel Hauner, Telair President. "We strongly believe that HULD's represent an immediate and cost-effective avenue to increasing on-board safety, and that Telair has the unique technology and ability to deliver that technology on-demand today.
A total of two units were blast tested within actual Boeing 747 fuselage sections. In both tests the TSA determined that the containers were able to withstand the explosion and contain a post-event fire. The surrounding aircraft frame structure was also examined after the test by TSA experts and deemed survivable. The in-service blast test process repeats the same test that must be passed to receive TSA Blast Resistant approval and FAA Technical Standard Order (TSO-C90) approval. The Telair HULD was first such container to receive both these approvals, in 2002.
"This critical evaluation was made possible through outstanding cooperation and teamwork on the part of the TSA, FAA, and other government agencies, said Hauner. "We are grateful for their collective time and attention, which has helped us speed the process of bringing this important new safety product to market.
Initial orders for the Telair HULD - the lowest weight unit available - were placed in early 2003 to a confidential customer.
