BAE SYSTEMS RECEIVES $110 MILLION CONTRACT TO SUPPLY ELECTRONIC SUBSYSTEMS FOR 60 C-17 GLOBEMASTER AIRCRAFT

BAE Systems Platform Solutions has received a $110 million contract from Boeing Integrated Defense Systems for flight controls, mission subsystems, and other electronic subsystems for U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft. The contract will support the Air Force's current order for 60 of the heavy-lift transport aircraft, which have demonstrated their strategic and theatre airlift capability in every recent worldwide military operation.

Over a four-year period concluding in 2007, BAE Systems will deliver the following subsystems for each of the 60 aircraft:

· Electronic Flight Control subsystem, a fly-by-wire system that includes the aircraft's autopilot function.
· Mission and Display Processing subsystem, which includes the central mission computer that manages the airplane's avionics and digital navigation system and the Video Integrated Processor, a high-speed computer that supports the vehicle's tactical terrain warning system.
· Loadmaster and Cargo Delivery subsystem, which handles control and dispersion of cargo, both in flight and on the ground.
· Vehicle Management Utilities subsystem, which detects, controls, and provides crew interfaces for the plane's environmental, electrical, hydraulic, auxiliary power, fuel, and other systems.

"As a longtime supplier of C-17 avionics, BAE Systems is extremely proud of the role we play in the success of this highly capable aircraft, said Mike Austill, vice president Aerospace Controls for BAE Systems Platform Solutions. "We are pleased again to have earned Boeing's confidence in receiving this major contract.

The 60-shipset order calls for BAE Systems to incorporate several updates designed to add functionality. BAE Systems began developing the Globemaster's electronic flight control in 1989 and since has grown to be the platform's largest electronics supplier. The current contract will supply the 60 aircraft Boeing is producing for the Air Force through 2008. To date, Boeing has delivered 113 C-17s to the U.S. Air Force and four to the United Kingdom Royal Air Force.
