NABCO, Inc. and Vulcan Lead partner to provide "Shield of Safety for NABCO Total Containment Vessels
--Innovative design provides the protection of lead but not the weight
It can happen anywhere, any time. The treat of terrorist activity, punctuated by the detonation of a so-called radioactive "dirty bomb, is a constant worry in today's world.
But thanks to NABCO, Inc., there is equipment available to emergency response teams that helps lessen the threat of destruction and contamination by providing a safe and easy way to remove that potentially dangerous device. NABCO markets a full line of Total Explosive Containment Vessels (TCV's). NABCO has just introduced the world's first TCV designed to contain a radioactive dirty bomb. This new shielded TCV will handle up to 200 Curies of cobolt-60.
To create the world's first shielded TCV, NABCO turned to Vulcan Lead of Milwaukee, Wis., to design and build the shielding.
"Lead is the single best shielding medium for virtually any kind of radiation exposure, said Vulcan CEO Chuck Yanke, "but the problem to date has been the weight required to provide adequate shielding and keep the TCV trailer-transportable. To solve the problem we took an origami approach to the shielding. This solution saved about 6,000 pounds. Final encapsulating of the origami pieces in stainless steel provided the long term durability expected of NABCO TCV's
"Working with Vulcan gave us a new appreciation for the innovation and creativity that good partners bring to the table, said Jay Markey, President of NABCO, Inc. "The first TCV made this way performed flawlessly in testing, and has been deployed to a California emergency response group. We've asked Vulcan to help us with several more. Security-alert organizations around the world are inquiring about our new shielded TCV.
