UTC Aerospace Systems' innovative design approach brings benefits to commercial space customers
UTC Aerospace Systems is using advanced tools and processes to design and develop environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS) for commercial space missions. The company has invested in "ready product" designs and customizable hardware that can be easily tailored to meet various customer requirements. The result is highly-engineered and reliable products that are available to the commercial space market at a lower price point than those designed for a specific application. UTC Aerospace Systems is a unit of United Technologies Corp.
"Using UTC R&D funding, we have been able to design products that, with minor modifications, can meet the requirements of multiple customers," said Jim Kammerer, general manager, crew vehicle solutions. "For example we designed a fan and electronic controller assembly where by simply changing the voltage, speed of the motor, or motor impeller and housing, we are able to meet multiple fan design points for multiple applications."
The ready product design approach brings significant benefits to customers. Cost and schedule savings are quickly realized given the high technology and manufacturing readiness levels of the solutions in the design portfolio at the time of contract award.
The UTC Aerospace Systems team is using this approach for their work on the Boeing CST-100 Commercial Crew Transportation system, where they are responsible for the design, development, qualification and production of components of the ECLSS system. The "ready product" fan is being used for two different applications on the CST-100. The team is also using the "model to metal" process for the fan housing and potentially other CST-100 hardware.
"The commercial space market is changing," said Allen Flynt, general manager, human exploration and launch vehicles, "and our investment in these processes makes our innovative products more affordable and applicable to a broad range of customers and missions."
