The newly formed company Airbus DS Electronics and Border Security (EBS) offers key sensor technologies from a one source. The new sensor specialist has been unveiled at the international level as "The new Sensor House" at Eurosatory Defence and Security Exhibition in Paris. EBS combines various Airbus activities from the areas of security and defence electronics and develops innovative products for reconnaissance and intelligence, the protection of soldiers and the creation of situation awareness, taking full advantage of the broad technology basis established by its predecessor companies such as Aerospatiale-Matra, Telefunken, Zeiss and Dornier.
EBS is currently a wholly-owned subsidiary of Airbus Defence and Space. The Airbus Group has concluded an agreement with the investment company KKR for the sale of shares and will initially transfer 74.9% of the EBS shares to KKR. The agreement is already cleared by the European Commission, and is subject to approvals by the Governments of France and Germany. It is expected to take effect by the first quarter of 2017 at the latest. Thereafter, the company will appear under the brand name "Hensoldt" following the tradition of a German pioneer of sensor technology whose name stands for the combination of excellence, innovation and efficiency.
"We bring together all the essential sensor technologies irrespective of a platform under a single roof and, as a result, are able to create exceptionally powerful products in the area of reconnaissance and intelligence," explained the managing director, Thomas Müller, at a press conference in Paris. "In this way, we ensure the operational capability of the Bundeswehr and the allied armed forces and make a decisive contribution to the protection of soldiers."
At Eurosatory, Airbus DS Electronics and Border Security presented its latest developments in the area of sensor technology and air traffic control. They include the ASR, the most powerful airport surveillance radar in the world, the TRS-4D naval radar system, which is at present being installed on the new German Navy frigates, and the MILDS missile warning sensor, which is the leading warning sensor for helicopters and wide-body aircraft in the world, with approximately 8,000 sensor units already sold. Also on display, was Sferion, the most advanced pilot assistance system, which protects helicopters in restricted visibility conditions and prevents the most significant causes of non-hostile losses.
Furthermore, EBS displayed its newly developed Electro-Optical Targeting System EOTS II. The modular system for new-built and legacy vehicles alike can be adapted to customer requirements with a choice of different day vision zoom cameras. This even includes a short-wave infrared (SWIR) option. The customer also has a choice of long-wave or mid-wave thermal imagers. The driver sight system SPECTUS II features a low light level TV camera (LLLTV) with an image quality at night almost paralleling that of a residual light amplifier. The advantage here is that the LLLTV camera can be used during the day without substantially reducing the operating time.
