UTC Aerospace Systems develops new integrated drive generator to reduce costs and fuel usage

UTC Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp., invested millions and nearly 15 years to develop a lighter and more compact advanced integrated drive generator (IDG) to power jets like Embraer's new E190-E2. The new IDG supplies the constant frequency electric power needed for the E2 jet, equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power 48 homes, with the added benefit of cost and fuel savings. The IDG, compatible with the E190-E2 and the E195-E2, is the first all-new integrated drive generator design in more than a decade and is the result of collaboration with Pratt & Whitney.

"As the world leader in electric systems technology, we are proud to introduce this latest advancement in integrated drive generators," said Tim White, president, Electric Systems for UTC Aerospace Systems. "The IDG is an example of how our more electric and more integrated systems are meeting the demands of today's new aircraft and providing real value to our customers."

To achieve the innovative new design, engineers from UTC Aerospace Systems and Pratt & Whitney worked collaboratively during the design phase of the E2 program to integrate a new IDG with an existing Pratt & Whitney engine gearbox. The UTC Aerospace Systems team developed a new patented axial sun differential technology to reduce IDG volume by 33 percent and weight by 5 percent, while eliminating changes to the engine gearbox and increasing input speed range.

UTC Aerospace Systems was also chosen by Pratt & Whitney as the exclusive nacelle provider for both engine models for Embraer's E-Jet E2 aircraft family. Embraer selected the company to be the sole source supplier of wheels and carbon brakes, as well as fire protection, evacuation systems and air data systems, for the E2 aircraft family. All jets will be equipped with Pratt & Whitney's PurePower® Geared Turbofanâ„¢ PW1700G and PW1900G engines, both of which include UTC Aerospace Systems engine controls.
