GRIPEN FOR DUBAI 2005 - LATEST GENERATION GRIPENS TO MAKE FIRST PUBLIC DEBUT
The well-known Swedish fighter jet Gripen will make its first public appearance in the Middle East at next month's (November) Dubai air show.
And to further highlight the important of this year's show - Dubai 2005, the ninth international aerospace exhibition - the Gripen version that will grace the skies over Dubai in the daily flying display will be the very latest model of this first new-generation fighter to enter service.
News of Gripen's entry into the Middle East came at a press briefing in Dubai today staged by the Swedish company Saab AB, the major defence company in northern Europe, and Gripen International the business unit within Saab responsible for marketing, selling and supporting the Gripen fighter worldwide.
Saab display pilot Fredrik Müchler will use a single-seat Gripen C or a dual-seat Gripen D - both of which are fully operational fighter aircraft - to perform his world-renowned air display that has won public acclaim over the past few years at the Farnborough and Paris air shows.
"In previous displays, Fredrik Müchler has used the ‘A' version of Gripen, but now the time has come to show the latest version, currently in service with the Swedish and Czech air forces, said Owe Wagermark, Communications Director, Gripen International.
"This will be our largest ever Dubai air show participation and we plan to have three aircraft at the show - with up to two single-seaters and a dual seater.
"We plan to participate in the daily flying display with a single seater, the other will be on the static park with a complement of weapons while the dual seater will be used for special flights, he added.
Saab says its enhanced participation follows contacts made at the last Dubai air show - Dubai 2003.
"These are contacts which we have since been following up on but which we cannot disclose for confidentiality reasons, says Paul Boxwell, Vice President-Sales & Marketing, Gripen International.
"Obviously the Middle East as a major procurer of defence equipment is of keen interest to us.
Saab participation at the Dubai air show will go well beyond a stunning aerial display. It will also include a display of a selection of Saab's broad portfolio of products and services for land, air and sea, such as Command and Control, Training and Simulation and Missile systems. To support this effort, Saab and Gripen International are planning to field a heavyweight delegation, which will be headed by the Saab Group Deputy CEO, Mr Ingemar Andersson and Mr Johan Leander, Managing Director, Gripen International , said Peter Millar, President, Saab International Middle East
