BAE SYSTEMS MATADORâ„¢ INFRARED ANTI-MISSILE SYSTEM CERTIFICATION A FIRST FOR BAE SYSTEMS
Missile jamming system for use on business and commercial aircraft
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has granted BAE Systems' MATADORâ„¢ IRCM System certification as an Approved Product for Homeland Security under the Support Anti-terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies (SAFETY) Act of 2002, it was announced at the Dubai air show.
In addition, Dr. Charles E. McQueary, Under Secretary for Science and Technology, has designated the MATADORâ„¢ System's technology as Qualified Anti-Terrorism Technology. MATADORâ„¢ is the only IRCM system that has received SAFETY Act certification and designation from the United States Government.
The MATADORTM Systems (Export MATADORâ„¢ and Biz Jet MATADORâ„¢) are lamp-based infrared countermeasure missile-jamming systems that can be deployed on fixed-wing aircraft to defeat first generation infrared missile threats. The MATADORâ„¢ Systems consist of related services and equipment, including: aircraft modification, installation support, interface control documentation, maintenance, maintenance and test equipment, repair, spare parts, cabling, training, and the provision of technical manuals.
Since 1987, the FAA-certified MATADORâ„¢ IRCM System has been the preferred defensive system for VVIP customers who fly internationally. MATADORTM is a modular system, tailored to each aircraft to meet specific customer requirements. Once the system is turned on prior to flight, MATADORTM operates continuously without operator intervention. System reliability has been proven through thousands of flight hours. The electronically modulated system provides high system reliability, high plasma arc lamp source reliability, multiple launch IR threat protection, all solid-state electronics, and low maintenance.
BAE Systems has delivered more than 14,000 infrared countermeasure systems worldwide, more than all other companies combined. The Company was also selected by DHS in January 2004 to design and develop a protective system for U.S. commercial aircraft against shoulder-fired missiles. The missiles have been used to down civilian airliners and have become regarded as a potential terrorist tool since the attacks of September 11, 2001 and subsequent MANPADS attacks on commercial airliners in Kenya in 2002 and Baghdad in 2003.
