DEFENCELL proves its versatility at this year's Military Engineering 2008 Conference

J & S Franklin, manufacturers of the DefenCell Wall and Barrier System, are for the first time sponsoring Shephard's Military Engineering 2008 Conference at the New Connaught Rooms, London, December 01 - December 02, 2008

The year's conference will bring together leaders from the world's military, government and industry to discuss and present on the most important topics covering engineering support in deployed operations. J & S Franklin has a great deal of experience in supporting operational forces and a number of recent projects have demonstrated the engineering versatility of DefenCell and its advantages in a wide range of roles.

DefenCell is currently in service with British Forces in Afghanistan and Irish Forces in Chad, where it is deployed as blast mitigation walls to protect highly vulnerable ammunition supply points. The DefenCell System has been developed to enable force protection walls to be rapidly built, on a small ground footprint, under operational conditions. Successive layers of DefenCell are built to the desired height.

Walls of any thickness or length can be produced to suit ballistic and vehicle impact requirements. A wide range of locally available fill materials can be used including sand, aggregates and earth, easily compacted to give DefenCell structural strength and integrity.

Following successful Vehicle Crash Testing by the UK's Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and US Department of State, K-12 Vehicle Barrier Certification, DefenCell is now deployed at a UK airport.

Three further examples of the versatility of the systems are:

In September DefenCell was supplied to a NATO Army for their pre-deployment training in Jamaica. It was used to build a CQB training house, 30 x 25m in size with 3.5m high walls, using sand fill and local labour. Minimal use was made of available plant and the structure was built mostly by hand using buckets and shovels. The DefenCell was delivered on only 5 standard shipping pallets and was hand carried onto site.

More recently the US Forces have ordered DefenCell to use as a deployable 'bullet trap' for installation behind 'pop-up' training targets in live fire training. The light weight of the DT1 units allowed them to be quickly and easily filled in situ, wherever the targets were located.

The DT1 has also undergone successful tests with the UK forces for EMOE training. Again the light weight allows the wall sections to be hand carried to remote training locations and filled on site. A breaching charge is detonated in contact with the wall and a realistic 'gap' is created that training soldiers can safely move through. The remaining parts of the wall can be easily removed and a new wall quickly built for subsequent exercises.

The non-metallic construction of DefenCell ensures there is no risk from ricochets or secondary shrapnel in close quarter training operations.

DefenCell is made from strong, durable and internationally proven geotextile material of cellular design, which provides strength with versatility. It also has a much lower logistical footprint than comparable systems, one 40' container will provide well over 1km of wall, 2m wide and 2m high, or 2.5 km of 1.25m wide, 1.50m high. It is up to 10 times lighter than other systems per m3 wall and takes up to five times less transport volume, a vital feature for operations in remote areas.
