DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano Applauds Aviation Security Measures in Nigeria
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano on Sunday visited Abuja, Nigeria, at the invitation of the Nigerian government, to meet with top officials from across Africa and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to discuss ways to bolster global aviation security.
She applauded the measures taken since Dec. 25 to strengthen aviation security in Africa, including Nigeria's installation of advanced imaging technology units at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, the nation's busiest airport.
Four of the scanners are SOTER full body low dose X-Ray scanners originally purchased by the United States Government in 2009 and donated to Nigeria to help combat the drugs trade but in the wake of the abortive Christmas day attempt by Nigerian national Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to blow up a US bound aircraft, the SOTER full body X-Ray scanners have been used in screening selected passengers prior to embarkation.
The SOTER RS is a through body x-ray system which combines ultra low radiation with maximum visibility. Within seconds you are able to see any hidden items, such as weapons, explosives, narcotics, diamonds, or any stolen or smuggled goods. It doesn't even have to be metal. The SOTER RS shows a clear difference between human tissues and other materials. Even ingested or camouflaged items will be shown. If it is there; the machine will point it out, within just 10 seconds!
These scanners will increase the level of security operations previously possible through the use of conventional metal detectors. Non metallic objects hidden under clothes, in natural cavities or within the human body cannot be detected by conventional metal detectors and typically, these non-detectable items, such as narcotics, explosives, precious stones, plastic weapons, or other contraband, can only otherwise be detected by highly intrusive total body searches.
SOTER is already operational in Australia, Ghana, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, and The United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Vietnam.
You can see the Soter at Counter Terror Expo 2010 on 14th and 15th April, 2010 at National Hall, Olympia, London, England, you will find OD Security on Stand No: C30 with Todd Research.
