Smiths Detection deploys explosive detection walk-through trace portal at Sacramento International Airport
Advanced Security Screening Technology Enhances Safety and Terminal Operations
Pine Brook, NJ, 23 January 2006 - Smiths Detection, the world's leading provider of trace detection and X-ray security screening equipment, today announced three of its Sentinel II explosive detection walk-through trace portals have been deployed at the Sacramento International Airport (SMF). Purchased by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the next-generation passenger security screening systems provide a high level of accuracy and speed.
The Sentinel II was deployed earlier this month at two Washington D.C. metro-area airports, Reagan National (DCA) and Washington Dulles International (IAD), as well as Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT).
The advanced technology was also previously deployed at two major New York City airports, Newark Liberty International and JFK International.
"Bringing three Sentinel II explosive detection trace portals to Sacramento demonstrates the growing need for this technology and positive reception by both passengers and local security officials,� said Mark Laustra, Vice President, Transportation Security Technology & Programs, Smiths Detection. "In aligning with TSA's efforts to increase automation and decrease human interaction in security screening, the Sentinel II represents a comprehensive enhancement to security screening.�
The Sentinel II enhances explosive detection capabilities by rapidly detecting various explosive substances that could emanate from a passenger's clothing, skin or hair. This non-invasive walk-through scanner helps to reduce the need for pat down procedures at the checkpoints with the devices.
Using Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), the walk-through trace portal operates automatically, passing air gently over a person from head to toe, releasing any particles that are naturally absorbed by or cling to a person's clothing or body. These particles are then drawn by a vacuum and collected for analysis at the passenger's feet. Detection of particles or vapors can indicate that a person is either carrying an explosive device or has come into contact with explosive substances.
During the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) field trials, completed in July 2005, the Sentinel II was tested at JFK International, McCarran International, Baltimore-Washington International and Jacksonville International airports to determine the systems capabilities and impact on terminal operations. Since then, more than 30 Sentinel II explosive detection trace portals have been purchased by the TSA for deployment at U.S. airports.
